It was always known, in our family, that my grand-mother, Patience Ann Boykin, was half Indian. My two older half-sisters, said that was true (they had known and lived with her). Also my uncles said the same. The Boykin family had lived in GA and after the government pushed them from their homes, into Oklahoma, nothing, I can find about them. They were of the Creek Tribe (there are Boykins now living in Oklahoma, owning oil wells). I have been working on this for a long time, so far, no soap.

...I got the info on Merideth being connected with the cattle industry, i.e. agent for RR, from my grandmother (Nina West Delleney). She also told me that her grandfather West (Meredith) died from some sort of illness, "got sick", which appears to be true, and that her grandmother, P.A., told her that Patience's grandfather (that would be great grandfather - Jim Allen) was a Tory, and that she had Indian in her family. On the Indian thing, my grandmother said that P.A. said that the Indian ancestor was four or more generations back from Patience (according to Patience), not that they were "half Indian" or anything like that which seems to have developed. In fact, I remember calculating with my grandmother that Patience was something like 1/16th or 1/32nd Indian. The Tribe was supposed to be Creek.

James A. H. Brownlow

James A. H. Brownlow - Civil War

James, father of Harriet Octavia Brownlow Smith, Thiddo Smith’s gandmother, was mustered into Company K of Floyd’s Legion of State Guards in Cedartown, Georgia, sometime before 1863. Company K was called “Johnson’s Cavalry.” Each man had to bring his own horse. In mid-1863, James’ horse died and he was transferred to Company H.

According to family history, Floyd’s Legion was guarding Rome and after the battle of Chickamauga, their supply lines were cut off by Sherman’s advance and they began to starve. They were told by Col. Yieser to get home the best they could, but James was transferred to Wofford’s Brigate in the Army of North Georgia. He attained the rank of corporal. He was later captured and paroled in May 1865 at Kingston, Georgia.

(The Joseph M. Brownlow with them in 1860 in his
nephew, the son of his brother Obediah J. Brownlow.)

With the out break of the War Between the States
James joined Co. K of Floyd's Legion (State Guards)
. He was mustered in Cedartown. Co. K was cavalry but
they had to bring their own horses and in mid 1863
his horse died. He was then placed into Co. H which
was foot Infantry. The story is told that during
Chickamauga Floyd's Legion was guarding Rome. Their
supply lines were cut and they began to starve. At
this point their Colonel, Yieser, told them to get
home the best way they could. He was then transferred
to Wofford's Brigade in the Army of north Georgia.
He was captured and paroled in May of 1865 near
Kingston Georgia. He made it back home and after the
war he moved his family to Bartow Co. They lived in
the Linewood community near Adairsville. J. A. H.
Brownlow and his family were not on the 1870 census.
Before the War he was a shoemaker and a leather
worker but afterwards he was just a farmer. In Bartow
County in 1880 we find:

E. Brownlow who had married a Witt. The census man
had incorrectly listed them as Brownlows. He received
a Confederate Pension in 1894 based on age and
infirmity. In Adairsville they were members of
Connesena Baptist Church. He had a two widowed
daughters and one widowed son that were living at
home at this time making a total of eleven people
living in the household. Even with all of these
people to support they never went without. He died
June 8, 1900 in Bartow Co. and is buried at Connesena
Church in Adairsville. His tombstone reads "United
with the Baptist Church 1846". Jane continued to
receive a Confederate pension. In Bartow County in

From Sandy Joy ( Lee ) Hall
Helen was my mother. She and my father divorced when I was 10 months old, and she married Bob Brownlow when I was 3. I was not related to Bob, but did live with him until he and Helen divorced....I was Bob’s step-daughter. I started school in Waco when we lived in Mrs. (Florence) Brownlow’s house. When I was in the third grade Bob and Helen bought a new home out by Lake Waco and I was in school there when they divorced and we moved to Corpus Christi. Cheryl was also in school there, but Billy had not yet started school.

I remember Bob being a terrific gymnast. We would go over to the Baylor University Campus where they had some outdoor bars and rings and Bob would use those. He was very strong.

He was also very intelligent. He worked for what was then called Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. His job, as I understood it, was to travel from relay station to relay station...they were/are small brick buildings located along the highways. He would either take readings or work on equipment at each station. It was in his travels when he met the woman he married after he and Helen divorced. He was married to that woman when he got into a fight and shot and killed a man. I kind of remember if was someone with status in the Dallas area where they shooting occurred, but by that time I was in Corpus living with Martha Pearl and Johnnie Eugene Chandler, my grandparents. Helen married again after we moved to Corpus; he husband was in the Navy so they moved to Massachusetts where Helen worked at the NAS in Civil Service so I lost track of Bob at that point. I had gone to spend two weeks with him and his second wife when I was 13...this being before the shooting.

While in prison Bob also offered his body to medical science for trial medications and procedures. In fact, they even took biopsies from his body to test after he had been on some of the medications. He was a “human guinea pig”. I don’t think he had any residual health problems from those tests, however, how would we have known? He did gain an inordinate amount of weight after he got out of prison. Bob was also a very talented artist. He made me a tray with match sticks and cut marbles in a design that was extremely intricate. Billy Bob must have inherited some of that artistic talent, as he also made lovely leaded glass lamps and oil paintings. ____________________________________________________________ ________________________________________

131 Alvie Basil Wilson, a long-time Waco resident, passed away at his home on Monday evening, November 28, after a lengthy illness. A graveside service will be held at Rosemound Cemetery on Thursday, December 1 at 2PM with Dr. Jimmie Johnson officiating. Burial will be beside his grandson, Jackson Lance Shank. No visitation is scheduled. Viewing will be at the cemetery, prior to the service only.

Alvie was born November 24, 1925 around the Downing Community close to DeLeon, Texas. He was the oldest of four children. He served in the Army-Air Corps during World War II. After his service, he moved to Waco in 1944 to work at General Tire and Rubber Company for 41 years as a foreman.

He was married to Jonita Jo Wilson who preceded him in death in the 1950’s. He then married Kathleen Chatham Wilson on August 16, 1969 at Columbus Avenue Baptist in a ceremony officiated by Dr. Joe Weldon Bailey. In 1972 their daughter, Laura, was born.

Alvie lived a very simple life and loved his family. He liked to work around the cows on his farm. He never asked for much in life, but his grandsons gave him so much happiness. He was a man people could be proud of by his work ethic and his love of family. His favorite Bible verse was Isaiah 40: 28-31.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; an infant son; and an infant grandson, Jackson Lance Shank, on May 21, 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Barry Shank of China Spring; twin grandsons, Ragan and Rian Shank; step-granddaughter, Hailey Roberts of Sherman; and siblings, J.W. Wilson of Denison, Wassalee Tucker of Early, and Larry Wilson of Atlanta, Georgia; and a wonderful caregiver, Joyce Toliver.

132 Amelia died in 1862 when baby Amelia was born.

Eli Williams, who was living in NC, received a land grant in Florida from U.S. Congress in 1798 for revolutionary services. This documentation is easy to find, but I have not tied him into our line yet. But, I think he will be there.

ca. 1790 a John Williams and wife, Amelia were living around the Waccasassa Marina and Levy County Boat Landing in Florida. In 1843, Amelia Williams, b. 1822 Florida, married William Monroe Brownlow. William and Amelia Williams Brownlow married in Early County, GA. in 1843. They moved immediately to Nachitoches Parrish, Louisana where their first four children (James Monroe Brownlow, Elias Albert Brownlow, Rebecca Brownlow and Mary E. Brownlow) were born. They moved on to Victoria County, Texas about 1857/8. In the 1860 Victoria County, Texas Census, there is an "N. Williams, age 18, born Florida" living with William and Amelia Brownlow and their children. In 1861/2 another baby, Amelia Brownlow II, was born. Amelia I died in 1862. William was killed in the Civil War before 1864. He had married 2nd. Malinda. Malinda changed the baby's name from Amelia II to Malinda Brownlow II according to the 1870 Census.

A brother, (Benjamin Brownlow, b. Chatham County, NC) to our line moved from Guillford County, NC, to Levy County, FL. Our Brownlow's came out of VA to NC before GA, LA and Texas. (Note: It seems more likely that William Monroe Brownlow was born in SC as that is what he documented in the 1850 La Census, Gene Brownlow)
Somehow, it seems logical that our Williams line migrated mostly through the same areas with the addition of Florida which was mostly populated by Native Americans at the time.

If anyone has information that would help me tie any of this together, it would be appreciated.

140 Arnold destroyed Revolutionary records in Washington and Tarleton in Isle of Wight but it is known that the following were in the army with Washington: Col. Josiah Parker, Maj. Francis Boykin, Capt. James Johnson, Gen. John S. Wills, Jesse Matthews, James Casey, Edward Ward, Robin Turner, Samuel McCoy, John Forrest, Henry Hill, Ben (Whalebone) Jones, and Moses Atkins. Col. Tarleton passed through the county twice at the head of a considerable British Cavalry. He committed wanton destruction carrying off slaves, cattle, horses and other property. In one of these raids, they were attacked by a body of Isle of Wight milita at a place called "Scotts Old Field" in Nansemond County and met with a defeat being driven across Milners Creek by the militia. The county bore the brunt of numerous invasions.
